Although there are a few communications aggrigators out there, like Threadsy and Fuser, I am going to look at this one first. Why? Because, thats why.

pitfall number one...

oh dear… it seems like no matter how I try, it doesn’t like Facebook. It took a good fiew tries to manage to add Twitter as well. I know in Vietnam the connections to FB are ‘kind of’ blocked (ie removed from the ISP’s DNS), but even bypassing this, I could not add facebook using any of the main browsers. Despite this I added my other IM and mail accounts, and it does have a nice interface, as shown below

unfortunatly, there are some major drawbacks, besides the Facebook problem, the main one being you can only add one account of each type of provider..? To aggrigate is to ‘combine and form a complete collection or mass” , it is not very complete if it does not allow for multiple accounts. Also I can find no way to all standard IMAP or POP3 mail accounts to the interface. So, although it may be nice to look at, I think it only deserves a 6/10 until the functionality is improved.

BustAName (still in beta)lets you add words that you might want to have and finds combinations of 2 or 3 (it is very customisable..

You can choose what 1st level domain, 2/3 word combos, prefixes & suffixes to addand more. After you have chosen these you add some words which you want to use in combination. So for example, lets try for a vietnamese school, usinmg keywords educate, learn, teach and viet. Also choose only a .org domain..

It have come up with 9 perfectly acceptable domains and their availability. It then even give you a comparison of the different domain registers with the prices that they charge for registration.

This takes a lot of the headache out of the task of finding a good domain, as well as a lot of the general donkey work of thinking of combinations, and looking up all the 1st level domain extensions to see it they are available or not.

Personally, I prefer BustAName method, but the ‘Wordoid‘ style might suit more marketing and product type websites. Try them both, see what you get. I found BoxKit.Org to play with from BustAName, lets see if I manage to use it or not…

Just posting this with the blog client, which picked up my account settings (including my username * password)without me asking it to… sounds pretty standard for Microsoft practice. Despite that, its not bad, it has some nice functionality..

Like the maps function. However, if I was lost (which is very often in HCMC)…

I think I might just trust Google maps to help me get home instead. To be honest from what it can do, it looks like Movable Type’s interface about 5 years ago with the same functionality. It apparently has a plugins section, but I can’t see any of my wordpress plugins there. After investigation it has its own plugins you have to install. So, Download, install (save and close current post if you are doing one), open program, tell it not to reconigure all your search engines to Bing, reload post…

Now, I may be wrong (except I’m not) but aren’t there about eleventy-twelve free websites that can do this for you, as well as umpteen WP plugins that can make you cover flow galleries and interactive montages using java? In that case, is this seen as an improvement.. It could be, if you call MS Paint an improvement over Photoshop…

I am guessing that if it may improve later with the WP / MS agreement, but also that people with Blogger accounts will be made to suffer for it too. Set up properly, the WP web posting interface can do so much more, and doesn’t require a setup that tries to reconfigure EVERYTHING on your computer which doesn’t point towards the MS mecca back to face the holy land. So I am officially calling it a crock.
